Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Web Harmonium really free?

Yes. No sign-up, no trial, no premium tier. The site is free forever and supported by a single non-intrusive sponsored listing below the guide.

Do I need to download anything?

No. Web Harmonium runs entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API. Open the page and press any key or tap the on-screen keyboard to play.

Does it work on Mac and Windows?

Yes — Web Harmonium runs on Mac, Windows, Linux, and Chromebook in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge. Our dedicated guides for Mac, Windows, and laptops walk through the setup.

Can I connect my MIDI keyboard?

Yes. Plug in any USB or Bluetooth MIDI controller and Web MIDI detects it automatically on Chrome, Edge, and Opera. We pass note, velocity, and sustain pedal through to the engine.

What is Sargam notation?

Sargam is the Indian counterpart to Western solfège. Its seven swaras — Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni — map to C, D, E, F, G, A, B. Every key on Web Harmonium is labeled with both systems.

Does Web Harmonium include a tanpura drone?

Yes. The built-in tanpura plays a continuous Sa-Pa-Sa pattern for pitch reference during riyaz. You can change its tonic and volume from the control panel.

Is there a built-in metronome?

Yes — a 40–240 BPM click for timing practice. Start slow, build up, and lock ragas into taals like tintaal, dadra, or rupak.

Can I record my playing?

Yes. The Record button captures a practice session. Play it back inside the browser to review your intonation and expression, or keep multiple takes open side by side.

Does it work on my phone or tablet?

Yes. The keyboard is touch-responsive and the layout adapts to small screens. Landscape orientation gives you the widest playable range on a phone.

Who is this for?

Vocalists doing riyaz, students learning Sargam, devotional singers preparing bhajans and kirtans, music teachers running remote lessons, and anyone curious about the Indian harmonium.

About Web Harmonium

Built for Indian Classical Music

Web Harmonium is a free, browser-based virtual harmonium built for musicians, students, and curious souls. A faithful recreation of the Indian classical instrument — 22 keys spanning two octaves, every note labeled with Sargam and Western notation, powered by a multi-reed Web Audio engine with natural reverb.

The harmonium arrived in India around 1840 and became essential to classical, devotional, and folk traditions. Today, anyone with a browser can practice the same scales, ragas, and bhajans — no physical instrument required, no downloads, no sign-up.

All audio processing happens locally on your device. Nothing is sent to any server. Free forever, supported by non-intrusive ads.
